Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing is one of my favourite things to work on with clients.

Not only does the natural ebb and flow of the breath set the stage for engaging the deep core, improving posture and low back pain, and increasing lifting power, it can also help release tension that has built up in the body over a number of years. In fact, many people feel surprisingly emotional when practising this technique for the first time!

Throughout our lives, our bodies develop all kinds of coping mechanisms when faced with emotional or physical stress. Many of these coping mechanisms result in faulty breathing patterns, poor posture, and muscle tension.

In fact, if the thoracic muscles at the back of the ribs become tight and trapped, they can contribute to over-stimulation of the autonomic nervous system, which controls the fight or flight response. This can lead to low-level anxiety and reduced muscle flexibility.

So regardless of your health and fitness goals, I highly recommend you take some time out to practise some deep breathing.

Be well everyone! Xxx
